Weekly Inspiration – Part I

Wow, this has been a crazy quick month and I can’t believe we are nearing the end of it.  I am thinking in order to carry out some of the things I was looking to change and work on in 2015 I am needing to remember to slow down and live in the now.  I am thinking if I schedule the day so I have some structure I will actually remember it and not let it pass so quickly and have it lost.  Note to self…tomorrow’s agenda after the dentist (Urgh) is to scehdule my next week with things I am wanting to get done.  It is not January 1 but it is no better day to start! Speaking of starting, our monthly challenge A Fresh Start ends on January 31 so be sure to get your submissions in for a chance to win $50 to spend with us in Inspiration Emporium.

Getting back on track…What a great month it has been for amazing artwork from our design team.  I hope you have been  checking out their blogs as many have been sharing incredible sample work they created for various lines that were showcased at CHA.  Congratulations to them all for the great honour of creating and their workmanship shown.  We have lots of pieces coming in so we are going to break them into two posts this week in order to get them all included and space out the awesomeness shared by our design team.  Double the inspiration in one week!

Old Paint Textured Background Tutorial by Yvonne Blair

Hi everyone…so excited to be here today to share with you this tutorial on creating a textured background that kind of looks like old paint.  I have this “Y” sign and I love the texture of the background so I set out to see if I could recreate the look.

Here is the sign that inspired me.

(I collect y’s)

First swipe some texture paste across a tag sparingly.

You don’t want it to cover the all of the tag just bits.

Next, start adding some color.  The first colors I use were Tumbled Glass and Broken China.

You don’t want to cover every part of the tag….just bits again.

 Next, add more Texture Paste.

Once it was all over the tag, I put the pallet knife straight on top of the wet Texture Paste and made more texture by picking it up and laying it down over and over.  Kind of like frosting a cake that you don’t want smooth.

Then came more Distress Inks.  More Broken China, Tumbled Glass and Weathered Wood.

Next you want to ink the edges using a Blending tool using Vintage Photo.

I loved how it didn’t colorize all of the tag….it left bits of the tag kind of showing through.

While the ink is still wet…you will want to coat the edges with clear embossing powder.

I keep mine in a container that has those locks on the ends.

This way I can just dip whatever I want in the embossing powder.

Before I used the Heat-it Tool I brushed a bit of the embossing powder away just using my finger.

You don’t want it to just be embossed straight lines along the edge you want it to look aged and chippy.  Like time has worn the color away.

Below you can see the finished tag with the embellishments in place.

I have to say it was really fun to work to try and recreate the texture.

While it is not identical, I think it worked out rather well.

What do you think?

Kind of fun right! wink.

Just to note a couple of other alterations…I used the Bronze Distress Paint to make the Philosophy Tags old and rusty.  I also dabbed it on Signmaker Alpha Parts on the Compass, let them dry and dabbed a bit of Gathered Twig Distress Ink just to help age them a tad.

So there you have it.

A very texturized background that is worn and aged.
Not really sure what I would call it, but I kind of like it. hehehe.

Hope you enjoyed…and maybe are inspired to look around and see what you can recreate.

Have a great day!

Hugs,

Yvonne
