Inspiration Monday

As I am sure many of you are in full swing Christmas mode, I wanted to stop in and share what our incredible design team has been busy creating.  This is a time of year when sometimes crafting gets put on the back burner to make room for decorating the Christmas tree, and rolling the favorite cherry and peanut butter balls.  Today I finished a stunning Christmas kit that I had promised myself I WOULD complete before Christmas day.  My goal was accomplished and it felt great to sit down and slow down for a bit to just create.  I recommend you all to take at least a few minutes to create a tag, a card or stamp that plain gift bag.  If you need some inspiration look no further because our design team always comes through with stunning ideas and be sure to share your creations with us here to get in on the random draw by December 31 at midnight.

Lisa Hoel is getting ready for the Holiday season and has come up with a great way to include gift cards with her yummy goodies.  I love this idea Lisa, a perfect gift for those holiday parties throughout the festive season.

We have cuteness overload with this next card from Karin Akesdotter.  Karin does an amazing job with her copics, the colouring is incredible! Super Cute!

Bobbi Smith has been busy creating some ATC tags perfect for any gift. Be sure to visit her blog to see all the details of each tag that might not be visible at first glance.

Beautiful job Bobbi!

Our team are really gearing up for the gift giving season with some stunning tags.  Kath Stewart continues the theme with these gorgeous ones.  What a great addition for any package!

Merry Christmas from our Inspiration Emporium family to yours! Enjoy everything that comes with this holiday season safely. h

Tis the Season

Happy December everyone, I trust everyone is in the swing of things for the holidays, celebrating in true fashion.  I always find this time of year so hectic getting ready for Christmas parties, get togethers and everything that goes with the holiday season that we sometimes forget to slow down.  I hope you are able to take some time to reminisce of the year that is coming to a close and appreciate all the blessings we have had over the year.  As I look back I realize it is not the material things that has brought me joy it is the people in my life, near and far that are what matter.  It is not money that brings happiness, it is people!  I may not be able to afford all the newest and fanciest things but the love from family and friends is priceless and is far more important.  This industry has connected me to some amazing people that I consider lifelong friends and that I am blessed for.  As you enjoy the holiday season I hope you take some time to slow down and reminisce about what has brought you joy and also get to do a little crafting. Since everyone’s holiday traditions are as unique and individual as they are, what better theme for December then Tis the Season: everything goes! That’s right, there are no restrictions we just want to see you crafting and coming up with something unique to you!  This month’s random winner will be receiving a prize package value at over $50 from Inspiration Emporium.  All projects shared with us below will have their name entered into the random draw but be sure to do so before midnight December 31, 2015 so you don’t miss out.

ATB Tutorial by Lisa Hoel

Hello everyone, Lisa here with an ATB tutorial for you! ATB stands for Artist Trading Block and these are like three dimensional ATCs and so much fun to make. The possibilities are really endless! Mine is called Button Love, and as you can see I really do love buttons and have quite a stash.

Let’s get started (or in other words, Step 1!) I knew I wanted a crackled heart for a topper and crackle paste take a while to dry so I started with that. Cut a heart out of matboard and basecoat both sides with dark brown paint. When it is dry I cover a side (you have to do one side at a time of course) with Wendy Vecchi’s Crackle Paste and let it dry. A medium think layer gives you some nice crackle – thicker paste equals bigger cracks. When both sides are dry and crackled I paint it with Barn Door and Aged Mahogany Distress Paint. While the paint is wet, lightly mist it with water to get it to marble together.

Step 2 – Cut two panels out of matboard using the Sizzix ATB Block Die. Working one panel at a time, cover it with a coat of Multi Medium and lightly lay torn pieces of sewing pattern tissue over it. Tap down onto the surface and scrunch it to get the wrinkles into it for texture. Press it down firmly then to get it all to adhere to the matboard surface. Cover it with another layer of Multi Medium to seal it and let everything dry, then trim the excess tissue off.

Step 3 – Paint over the surfaces with Walnut Stain Distress Paint, making sure to get it into the nooks and crannies. Wipe off the paint with a baby wipe before it dries, leaving it in the textured parts. You can remove paint to your taste – leave a little or a lot! When the paint is dry, you will need to lightly score through the tissue with a craft knife at the block fold lines. Otherwise the tissue will tear and look messy when you fold the box up.

Step 4 – Cut four 2.5 inch squares out of quilt batting and fabric. I used Tim Holtz fabric for mine. I love the vintage look of the patterns. Sew around the edges, leaving about 1/8 inch border. Use a craft pick or distressing tool to fray the edges.

Step 5 – Now comes the really fun part! Arranging the buttons! (I fussed around with them until I got them laid out in pleasing arrangements on each fabric panel.) Then lightly glue the buttons down with a strong, quick grabbing glue. Just a few dots (and not blocking the holes!) will do the job. You just need to hold them in place while sewing them on.

Step 6 – After sewing the buttons, which admittedly does take a while but I think the effect is worth it, glue the fabric panels in place on the matboard side panels. Sometimes I assemble the ATB before decorating it, other times I do everything while it is flat and assembling is the last step. It just depends on what you are doing. Fold on all the score lines.

Assembly tips: Use a strong tape like Wonder Tape or a super strong fast tacky glue. (My favorite is Api’s Crafter’s Pick The Ultimate! glue.) Once it’s all together you can add feet, the topper and other embellishments. Whew, that was a long tutorial but I hope you are inspired to try some of these techniques or make your own ATB. You can search for ATB on my blog and see others that I’ve done or search in Pinterest and you’ll get an eyeful. =) Be sure to stop back soon to check out the new Inspiration Journal challenge for June. We’d love to see your projects.

A New Week, A New Month…

Happy March All!  With a new week and a new month we all know what that can only mean…inspiration and a brand new monthly challenge for you all.  I believe our design team is hoping and wishing for an early spring when you see what they have created.  I am not sure about you, but this girl totally is as well!  I am SO ready for winter to be OVER! Don’t take things personally winter, but I sure could show you the door.

Up first, we have a cute, colourful and fun piece from our sweet Alice Wertz. I love the use of the different elements to create great dimension in this note card using stamps by Paper Smooches and no line colouring.  Receiving this in the mail would sure put a smile on the face of anyone opening it.

Ann Redfern had a great time using the Dimensional Cutting Pad by Tim Holtz and Sizzix for her CC3C submission she created two to share with us.  This first piece is a stunning creation with a beautiful bright colour combined with the crisp white.1-IMG_2055

A second piece from Ann keeps with the nature theme but this time uses the amazing dragonfly and again terrific colouring.  If you do not have a dimensional cutting pad of your own, this challenge will make you want one for sure with so many gorgeous pieces created.  Be sure to check out the challenge and projects HERE.

What a fun vintage looking piece by Karin Akesdotter.  This card takes me back to the fashion plates and scrap material of yester years.  This is a great use of Hero Arts’ Sew Stylish stamps.

There is nothing better than going to the mailbox and finding a sweet thinking of you note card from a special someone.  Karin Akesdotter is created this gorgeous card with beautiful subtle colours and a perfect way to say ‘Thinking of You’

Check out the fantastic colours and layers Bobbi Smith used in this masterpiece! This piece is definitely choosing to shine!!

If this card doesn’t bring brighter days ahead, nothing will!  Great colours used by Lisa Hoel that will sure brighten anyone’s day using the dimensional cutting pad.

Like I said it was a nature theme this week and butterflies are gracing many of the projects.  Be sure to check out the tutorial Bobbi Smith shared to see all the detail that went into making this stunning dimensional piece.

Congratulation Kimberly, please contact us at to claim your prize.

Wrapping up one monthly challenge only means we are in store for another new exciting one.  March brings with it the single sweet word of Spring and all that comes with it.  That hopefully means no snow, warmer temperatures and the signs of life renewed in nature.  For me it seems like a million years away with all the snow we have here but it can’t stay that way forever right??? What better way to celebrate March and Spring than with a monthly challenge of Spring Blooms. Your projects will need to include flowers in some way.  They can be stamped, floral paper, floral embellishments, die cuts…you get the idea.  Flower power might just speed up Spring or that is what we are at least hoping.  All entries are to be linked below and you have until March 31, 2015 to enter for a chance to win $50 to spend with us at Inspiration Emporium.  Show us your creativity and join in the fun! h
