Halloween Candy Box Tutorial by Bobbi Smith

Hi everyone, Bobbi here. With Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to make a fun Halloween candy box for little treats.

DSC_0891_Snapseed copy

To start off with I die cut some medium weight chipboard out of the Eileen Hull- Candy Drawer Box die #657726. I used three colors of distress paint to create this effect Black Soot, Peeled Paint and Mowed Lawn.

IMG_4229_Snapseed

The first layer of distress paint I used mowed lawn, it’s okay if it looks streaky I will be creating layers.

IMG_4232_Snapseed

Then I dried first layer thoroughly with the heat tool.

IMG_4233_Snapseed

For the second layer I used peeled paint. When I applied this layer I didn’t put a full coverage coat on, I want to see streaks and patches of the first color.

IMG_4236_Snapseed

I dried second layer of paint with heat tool.

IMG_4243_Snapseed

For this third layer of paint I used the black soot and I wanted the applicator portion to be very dry so I soaked up a little bit of excess paint with a paper towel.

IMG_4246_Snapseed

I wanted a very streaky look so I only applied a little bit around the edges barely dragging it across the chipboard. Then I dried with the heat tool again.

IMG_4247_Snapseed

Now here is where the magic happens, I took a Tim Holtz sanding grip and sanded off a portion of the colors that were applied.

IMG_4251_Snapseed

Here’s what I had after I took a towel and wiped off the sanding dust.

IMG_4252_Snapseed

I then took vintage photo distress ink and a blending tool and applied to all of the chipboard.

IMG_4257_Snapseed

I ended up wiping a little bit of the distress ink away with a damp towel (I felt it was a little too dark) and then dried thoroughly with the heat tool.

IMG_4260_Snapseed

The stamps that I used out of the set were the spider, the professor, the bottles and the equation from Tim Holtz Mini Halloween 4 CMS198. I stamped on all 4 sides of the drawer.

IMG_4261_Snapseed

I used jet black archival ink for the stamping. I used sticky note and taped off any of the sides didn’t that I didn’t want the excess stamping to get on.

IMG_4263_Snapseed

I punched a hole in the center of my chipboard before I assembled the outer box portion.

IMG_4272_Snapseed

I bent all the folds and assembled with Helmar quick dry 450 adhesive, including the bottom portion of the drawer.

IMG_4268_Snapseed

IMG_4271_Snapseed

I applied some Tim Holtz sprocket and mini gears using glossy accents.

IMG_4277_Snapseed

After I applied the gears, I screwed the Tim Holtz clock key into place.

IMG_4281_Snapseed

I glued the Tim Holtz crossbone adornment to the monocle with glossy accents then attached it to the end of the swivel class.

IMG_4282_Snapseed

To use the wishbone as a charm, I had to create a hole in the end of it. I took my piercing tool and a small piece of foam that comes in the Texture Fades (you know the little piece that you usually throw away) to pierce the hole.

IMG_4285_Snapseed

The swivel clasp and the monocle each come with an O ring at the end of them, so I had an extra O-ring to use for the wishbone to attach to the swivel clasp. I attached the swivel clasp to the clock key on the top of the box.

IMG_4288_Snapseed

I decided I wanted to use some of Tim Holtz Apothecary Remnant Rubs on the candy drawer box. Black and white remnant rubs both come in the package, I decided to go with the white ones.

IMG_4266_Snapseed

They’re so easy to use, I just chose what I wanted, cut it out and applied with the popsicle stick.

IMG_4290_Snapseed

After I was finished I filled my candy drawer box with candy corn! This is a fun way to give a special little gift during the Halloween season.
