Waste Not, Want Not Tutorial by Anne Redfern

Hello everyone, I am sure we have all been there, you spend time creating something and it just does not work out the way you had in your mind.  I was following a tutorial, on line, for a weathered paint background but several coats of paint and Vaseline later, it just was not happening.  It went away in a cupboard and I only found it again after a clear out.  Here’s what I made.

1-IMG_3384
I will take you through some of the steps that show how I reached this end result.
1-IMG_3349
I started with a 5″ x 7″ thin, hard back canvas and covered it in strips of book pages and some of Tim Holtz’s Correspondence papers.
1-IMG_3353
Many layers of paint and Vaseline later – it just wasn’t working.  I know people say, oh it’s only a piece of card / canvas, just throw it away and start again….  As a ‘thrifty’ crafter I couldn’t throw it away…… and now I am glad I didn’t….
1-IMG_3359
A couple of coats of Gesso and a little stencilling using Tim’s Flourish Stencil and Ranger Embossing Paste and it is starting to look a little better.
1-IMG_3362
I gave the base a coat of Bundled Sage Distress Paint and left it to dry naturally.   I dry brushed some Vintage Photo Distress Paint around the edges and across the raised areas of the flourish stencilling.
1-IMG_3378
I cut some Tattered Florals from the Bigz Tattered die using some white (fairly thick) card and soaked these by giving them a heavy spray of water and letting them sit for a few minutes.  I scrunched them up tight whilst wet.  Again, whilst wet, I gently unravelled them.  While still wet (and working carefully so as not to rip the card) I layered the flower up, shaped the petal until I was happy with them and left it to dry naturally.  Once dry I carefully dis-assembled the flower and glued each layer together and once the glue was dry I sprayed the flower with Abandoned Coral Distress Spray Stain.  You could colour the flower at the point where you initially wet it, by using a mix of water and Distress Stain, but apart from staining your hands, the colour does not seem as vibrant once dry.  It is just a matter of personal choice – either way works.
1-IMG_3376
I cut some of Tim’s Garden Green leaves from white card and sprayed them with Mowed Lawn Distress Spray Stain to go behind the flower.
1-IMG_3390
The butterfly was die cut from Tim’s Butterfly Duo set, embossed and coloured with Broken China Distress Ink and Edged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I added an Idea-ology pin which says Memento on it.  The ‘this is life’ is one of Tim’s Framed Alpha Parts which has been lightly dabbed with Vintage Photo Distress Paint to tone in with the background.

So there we have it, one rescued canvas, I hope you like it and thanks for looking!

Happy March All!  With a new week and a new month we all know what that can only mean…inspiration and a brand new monthly challenge for you all.  I believe our design team is hoping and wishing for an early spring when you see what they have created.  I am not sure about you, but this girl totally is as well!  I am SO ready for winter to be OVER! Don’t take things personally winter, but I sure could show you the door.

Up first, we have a cute, colourful and fun piece from our sweet Alice Wertz. I love the use of the different elements to create great dimension in this note card using stamps by Paper Smooches and no line colouring.  Receiving this in the mail would sure put a smile on the face of anyone opening it.

Ann Redfern had a great time using the Dimensional Cutting Pad by Tim Holtz and Sizzix for her CC3C submission she created two to share with us.  This first piece is a stunning creation with a beautiful bright colour combined with the crisp white.1-IMG_2055

A second piece from Ann keeps with the nature theme but this time uses the amazing dragonfly and again terrific colouring.  If you do not have a dimensional cutting pad of your own, this challenge will make you want one for sure with so many gorgeous pieces created.  Be sure to check out the challenge and projects HERE.

We at Inspiration Emporium want to thank each and every one of you for participating in our monthly challenges each month.  We are glad these challenges help to motivate you to be creative and possibility venture out of your comfort zone and trying something new and different.  It is a great way to explore different blogs and see the world from the comfort of your own home; so thank you for being a part of our family here at Inspiration Emporium.  February’s challenge of Love is in the Air struck a chord with a lot of you and there were so many amazing pieces shared.  The random winner of $50 to be spent at the Inspiration Emporium online store for February is…

#42 Kimberly Cobb

Congratulation Kimberly, please contact us at heather@inspirationemporium.com to claim your prize.

Wrapping up one monthly challenge only means we are in store for another new exciting one.  March brings with it the single sweet word of Spring and all that comes with it.  That hopefully means no snow, warmer temperatures and the signs of life renewed in nature.  For me it seems like a million years away with all the snow we have here but it can’t stay that way forever right??? What better way to celebrate March and Spring than with a monthly challenge of Spring Blooms. Your projects will need to include flowers in some way.  They can be stamped, floral paper, floral embellishments, die cuts…you get the idea.  Flower power might just speed up Spring or that is what we are at least hoping.  All entries are to be linked below and you have until March 31, 2015 to enter for a chance to win $50 to spend with us at Inspiration Emporium.  Show us your creativity and join in the fun! h

Weekly Inspiration – Part I

Wow, this has been a crazy quick month and I can’t believe we are nearing the end of it.  I am thinking in order to carry out some of the things I was looking to change and work on in 2015 I am needing to remember to slow down and live in the now.  I am thinking if I schedule the day so I have some structure I will actually remember it and not let it pass so quickly and have it lost.  Note to self…tomorrow’s agenda after the dentist (Urgh) is to scehdule my next week with things I am wanting to get done.  It is not January 1 but it is no better day to start! Speaking of starting, our monthly challenge A Fresh Start ends on January 31 so be sure to get your submissions in for a chance to win $50 to spend with us in Inspiration Emporium.

Closing out the Year of Inspiration

It is hard to believe we are almost to 2015.  All of our Inspiration Emporium family hopes that you had a wonderful holiday season enjoying time with family and friends and taking time to reflect on all that we are grateful for this year.  When we look at what is truly important we find it is not the materialistic things we can touch but it is the feeling we get from being around loved ones, watching the little ones interacting with Santa or carrying on traditions that have been going on for years.  That is the true magic!  With only a few days left in 2014 we would like to fill it with inspiration from our incredible design team capping it off  with a tutorial on New Years Eve.  We hope you have enjoyed all the fantastic artwork this year and continue to visit through 2015.  We all create for ourselves because it just feels great but we also create to share and show others because it is the kind of people artists are…what kind of industry would we have if no one shared their talent?  Thankfully we do not need to worry about that because we have amazing inspiration to share with you so be sure to check back over the next few days to see even more.

Shelly Hickox did a fabulous job with her 12 Days of Ornaments and these are days 9, 11 and 12.  Be sure to check them all out if you haven’t already.  This is a great tradition to start Shelly, I hope we can see more next year!
